Shakespeare Street runs from English street near the cinema to the junction of the High Street.  The same road becomes Nith Place and Nith Street before joining the Whitesands near the Suspension Bridge.

Originally these were three distinct streets connected to each other.  A large number of demolitions in the late 20th century (mostly on the West/town centre side) aligned the streets by making them wider.

The widening work on Nith Place was performed between late 1972 and early 1973.  The work took longer than expected largely due to the large numbers of utility pipes and cables below ground in the area.
